Asked your parents to pay for college? Of course. Took out a loan? That’s pretty common. Saved up every penny yourself? You definitely deserve a pat on the back. But as much as I encourage education, I don’t think it has to take place in the classroom.
One of the most talented and successful people I know is 100% self-taught. Although I personally needed the course structure of post-secondary schooling to set me on the right track academically, when it comes to life, I feel strongly that there is more to be gained out in the real world. And I’m not just referring to street-smarts.
Travel.
Ask your parents for money to get the hell out of your bubble. Take out a loan even if you hate the idea of debt. There is such a thing as good debt and bad debt. Or, which is what most of us do since we consider travel such a luxury, save your money. Whatever you do, it’s important to explore different cultures and be exposed to different ways of living.
My biggest pet peeve is close-mindedness — especially when it comes down to ignorance and a neglect to experience new things. To this day I still try to eat goat cheese because I never know if my taste buds will change. To this day, I think imagine it to be what dirty wet socks would taste like if I ever decided to chew on one.
Unless you are born without an immune system, you should not be living in a bubble. Period.
I’ve been extremely fortunate to have travelled around the world. In an effort to encourage people of to do the same, I’m going to start talking about where I’ve been, where I’m going and where I hope to be. So stay tuned!
