Over the last few years, there has been an obsession over the idea of proper posture and a person’s general physical well-being in the office setting. Product after product has been made to combat the cancer-like stigma the act of sitting has taken on. Yet what experts and companies aren’t acknowledging is the simple fact that there’s no such thing as proper posture.

At least that’s the mind-boggling truth Vinh (Vinnie) Pham of Myodetox dropped on me during my first session with him. I’ve always been obsessed with posture, even though mine has deteriorated over the years — or so I thought.

Turns out, sitting up rigidly straight for hours on end can be just as bad as slouching over a keyboard. The way Vinnie put it to me is that our spine is capable of slouching for a reason — we should be making that move as well as sitting up straight and to the side and the other side. Basically, proper posture means changing it every once in awhile to ensure the spine and body as a whole keeps moving.

This is a concept that makes me appreciate my fidgety nature in a way that I never felt I could before. Of course, there is a science to the commonly held idea behind “proper posture” that I’m not trying to refute. All I want you to take away is the fact that moving is better than staying stagnant and, most importantly, that you shouldn’t ever believe there’s just one way of doing something.
